The Rough & Tumble @ Chenango Craftsman — 14 October 2018

The Rough & Tumble are a teeny-tiny traveling folk band who used to live in Nashville, Tennessee but now live on the road in a 16 foot camper with their dog, Puddle. Their new album, We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn’t Know, is as “cozy, comfortable and inviting as a well-worn couch.”

The Rough & Tumble

The Rough & Tumble used to say that they “used to say we were from Nashville, Tennessee.”  But nearing the end of their third year on the road full time with their original rescue tour dog, Butter (*), and her kid sister, Puddle, who was picked up along the way in Alabama, it’s hard to say if they are from anywhere at all.

Pennsylvania-born Mallory Graham and California-born Scott Tyler have lived in their 16’ camper since 2015, making tire tracks nationwide since 2011 as a folk-Americana duo.  Their history goes back as far as New England in the fall of 2007, and as close as going from friends, to bandmates, to married bandmates.  The story is as linear and circular as any, but one thing stands out:

Their home is the road.  But also, it’s not.

With the release of their first full length record, We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn’t Know (2018), the folk-Americana duo retraces their mileage back to their footsteps and explores the struggle between going home and being home already, when there’s no other home and everywhere is home.  Recorded in East Nashville with Dave Coleman, The Rough & Tumble invited a couple of musician friends from their sad-singer-songwriter and rock-n-roll-rebel days to accompany them on a portrait of what has happened so far, and what they hope is still to come.

We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn’t Know comes after a long line of first EPs (three, to be exact from 2011-2012); a year-long, 24-song, tongue-in-cheek writing project called The Rough & Tumble’s Holiday Awareness Campaign (2013); a soundtrack for a short film about women, war, and PTSD called Pieces and Pieces (2016); and their latest EP, Cardboard and Christmas Lights (Rock Candy Recordings, 2017).

Prolific songwriters and born-travelers, The Rough & Tumble are traveling coast-to-coast throughout 2018, and are writing toward a late 2019 release. They are willing to consider stopping, should the music run out of them and the road end.  But until then, they are likely cross referencing a map to a calendar at this very moment for a show near you.

(*) In November 2017, they lost their best pal, Butter– a tough blow that brought the crew back to three, and to whom their recent release is dedicated.

Chenango Craftsman Sessions

The Chenango Craftsman Sessions are an occasional series of concerts and live recording events which take place at the home of Sarah Gerk and Andru Bemis in the Northside of Binghamton, New York. Because of the intimate nature of the space, sessions are by invitation only. This can come from a performer’s newsletter or website, through our periodic email newsletter (sign up here), or from an acquaintance, family member, or other guest.

Recordings from the Chenango Craftsman Sessions are broadcast during the Audio Classics Local Music Hour on WBDY-LP 99.5 FM, Binghamton’s new community radio station. The Local Music Hour airs weekdays at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and weekends at 7 p.m.

100% of audience donations go directly to the artist. To ensure a seat for you at the performance, we encourage you to make your donation in advance. Guests without advance reservations may donate—cash or check—at the concert, and will be seated according to availability. Reasonably well-behaved kiddos and babies are always welcome.

Doors open at 6:30 pm. Join us for potluck-style food, snacks and drinks before the concert, if you wish. Don’t feel that you must bring something to be included; there’s enough for everybody. Music starts at 7:30 pm. Mallory and Scott will play till 9 pm or so. Feel free to stay and visit after the performance, and don’t be afraid to arrive late or leave early if your schedule requires it.

We’re looking forward to seeing you on the 14th!
