Our first set of recordings this week is from Tim Eriksen, who set up a microphone for us on the front porch of his home in Amherst, Massachusetts. Tim is probably best known for his work on the Cold Mountain soundtrack or for his 2010 Grammy nomination with Afro-Cuban pianist Omar Sosa. He’s an ethnomusicologist, professor, and a student of Eastern European folk music. He’s also the only musician to have shared stages with both Kurt Cobain and Doc Watson.
Then, we jump across the US to the Shook Twins, who have holed up with their parents in Sandpoint, Idaho. Identical twins Katelyn and Laurie Shook have been performing together since 2004, and have made fans of everyone who’s heard them along the way, including Mason Jennings, Laura Veirs, and Neil Gaiman.
To close out the session, we have a couple pieces from pianist, Jonathan Pinkey, from Tulsa, Oklahoma. We made these recordings in my living room just a couple days before the pandemic shut down New York State.
Funding for the Chenango Sessions is provided in part by a project grant from the Broome County Arts Council’s United Cultural Fund.
